Earth Day 2018: Sustainable Decor

Last year, I talked about how to create a more sustainable living environment. If you missed that post- you can read it here. But sustainability doesn't have to stop with the structure of your home- it's very easy to incorporate healthy materials into the design and style of your space as well.

Creating a clean living environment has numerous benefits. Decor made from recycled materials such as polypropylene is great for outdoor use. This is resistant to molds and mildew and resilient to the changes that the seasons bring. These materials are durable and strong- which offer a good alternative to traditional products when being used in high traffic settings and around kids and pets. Reclaimed decor embraces the beauty and natural patina of recovered materials. This brings new life to useful objects by transforming them into new beautiful and functional peices that someone else will love for years- and spares them the journey to a landfill. Sustainably sourced products and decor are those that are made from plants and natural materials that grow abundantly in their native environment and are processed and produced to strict standards. A big factor in sustainably sourced products includes safe and humane working conditions. How can you tell if you are buying something that has been ethically produced? Look for Fair Trade certification. Below are just some of the labels to be on the look out for when shopping for certified fair trade items.

Recycled Decor

Mad Mats | Bouquet Outdoor Rug

Mad Mats | Bouquet Outdoor Rug

Mad Mats

Product: Bouquet Outdoor Rug

  • Made from 100% recycled polypropylene (plastic milk jugs, containers, etc.)
  • Fair-Trade
  • Mold and mildew resistant

About Mad Mats:

"Mad Mats are woven with the highest-grade poly made from recycled plastics; like soda and water bottles, packaging, etc. We sourced state-of-the-art conditioners to make the tubular threads softer and resilient (Amy compares them to “al dente spaghetti”), colorants for brighter, vivid colors, and UV inhibitors to keep them from fading. The result is that our rugs don’t fade, stain, or trap moisture or mildew. Exactly how it should be: no care is carefree!"

Loll Designs | Lollygagger Lounge Chair

Loll Designs

Product: Outdoor Lounge Chairs

  • Easy to clean and requires no maintenance
  • Made with 100% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) primarily from milk jugs

About Loll Designs:

"Based in Duluth, MN, Loll Designs is a designer/manufacturer of durable, all-weather, outdoor furniture and accessories made with recycled plastic – mostly from singleuse milk jugs. Using thoughtful, original designs and unique materials, Loll creates innovative, fun and highquality products proudly crafted in the USA. Originally, we used recycled postindustrial plastic (scrap that has been diverted or recovered during the manufacturing process), but by 2007, we began sourcing post-consumer plastic (material that has been used by consumers and diverted or recovered from waste destined for a landfill). This is when Loll, as both a product and a company, really started to take shape as a green company. An estimated eight recycled milk jugs go into each pound of a Loll Adirondack Chair, which equals about 400 milk jugs per chair. Plus, our recycled material is 100% recyclable, so its purpose can change again into another useful product when that day comes."
